Today IT is a tool for the internally focused production of data records by procedures with fixed outcomes built around unique proprietary applications, justified by cost reduction efficiencies. Tomorrow it should be a tool that faces outward towards the market, and uses standardised “services” to interact with customers and suppliers to trade more effectively for increasing competitive differentiation and value.
Service-Oriented Architecture holds the promise of a new generation of IT, able to provide new capabilities and business values, based upon the ready integration of services. In a world driven by interactivity and volatility, the current design of static business procedures and processes needs to be reconsidered and augmented with new thinking.
