The importance of retail markets
Competition is generally seen as the best way to drive efficiency in the energy value chain. Therefore it is necessary to have an unbundled value chain to ensure transparency and non discriminatory access to the transmission and distribution infrastructures. While unbundling has not changed the physical value chain, the contractual value chain has changed a lot. This then creates the challenge of efficient data management between unbundled industries, in particular the way charges and bills are calculated. Wholesale markets dealing with this new unbundled value chain have largely been put in place and some markets have started to design the retail side.
